Custom Glass Etching

Custom Glass Etching

This project started as an experiment. I wanted to see how much fine detail I could successfully reproduce on glass using laser engraving, and the VFW emblem gave me the perfect design to put that process to the test.

As a veteran and a member of the VFW, the project already had personal meaning. There was plenty of testing involved—adjusting settings, preparing the glass, and finding the right balance between a strong, clean etch and avoiding chipping or damaging the surface.

Once I had the process dialed in, I was impressed by just how much detail the glass could hold. What began as an experiment turned into something I was genuinely proud of.

I gave the finished glasses to Matthew Jakutowicz, a Navy veteran, fellow VFW Post member, and a great friend. That seemed like a much better home for them than sitting on a shelf as test pieces.

This project reminded me that sometimes experimenting with a new process can turn into an opportunity to make something meaningful for someone you care about.
